Thinking of beautifying your home to welcome guests this Chinese New Year? Try out these DIY festive decorations hand-made by team ERA. Happy Chinese New Year from all of us at ERA!
Challenge 1: DIY CNY Red Packet Basket |

Step 1: Firstly, you will need 6 vertically long red packets. (Size of ang bao used in the picture is 16.5cm by 8.9cm) | |
Step 2: Cut out 6 card boards suitable to be inserted into the red packets. (Card board size: 16.3cm x 8.5cm, 0.3cm thick) | |
Step 3: Use a cellophane tape to stick red packets all together after you have inserted all the cardboards into the red packets. | |
After sticking them altogether, the body of your basket is done! | |
Step 4: Cut a hexagon shape out of any cardboard (for instance, a Mandarin Orange box), and wrap it with any design | |
Step 5: Place your hexagon board on the top of the basket and stick it the flaps of the red packet. | |
Step 6: Roll 6 pieces of gold-coloured red packets and glue the ends together. | |
The rolled-up gold-coloured red packets should look like these. | |
Step 7: Stick them using glue around the base edges of your basket. | |
Step 8: Fold two red packets into fans and glue them together. You will need to make 6 sets to decorate each side of the basket. | |
Step 9: Cut a long strip from a cardboard to form your basket handle and wrapped it any red paper. | |
Step 10 (final): Stick the handle onto the inner side of the basket including the fans that you have made in step 8 and your DIY CNY basket is done! |

Challenge 2: DIY CNY Star Lantern |

Step 1: Fold a vertically long red packet into half (Size of red packet – 16.2cm by 8.2cm). | |
Step 2: Unfold from Step 1 and fold the red packet into half again horizontally. | |
Step 3: Unfold from Step 2 and fold the corners of the red packet similar to the picture shown. Ensure that the ends meet the marks that you have folded in Steps 1 and 2. | |
Ensure that your red packet is folded on all 4 corners. | |
Step 4: Repeat steps 1 to 3 for 14 red packets. | |
Step 5: Staple or glue 7 of the red packets to form a star shape. | |
Step 6: Repeat step 5 for the other side of the star. | |
Step 7 (final): Staple the 2 sets together and your lovely lucky star lantern is ready for display! |

Challenge 3: DIY CNY Flower Lantern |

Step 1: This lantern requires patterned papers or square red packets. Ensure that you have 60 pieces of paper sized 3 inch x 3 inch. | |
Step 2: Choose one side of the square and stick the scotch tape along the side as shown in the picture. | |
Step 3: Fold the adjacent side of the square paper and stick the sides together into a cone. | |
Step 4: Make a “flower” with five of the cones by sticking them side by side. | |
To make a full lantern, you will need 12 of such flowers. | |
Step 5: Assemble half of the lantern using 6 flowers that you have made in step 4 and you will form a semi-circle. Make 2 of these sets. | |
Step 6 (final): Connect the 2 semi-circles made in step 5 together and you have a pretty flower lantern for your home! |
