Maximise Space, Maximise Life

1 Mar 2018

Today’s housing space is definitely smaller than 10 to 20 years ago, as land is increasingly scarce in Singapore. A typical family would need a 4-bedroom HDB flat, which is about 90 square metres. A 3-bedroom is tight to fit a family, however, it is still possible, depending on the priorities of the family and how they make great use of the given, limited space. Of course, it would be best to be able to own a private apartment or a landed house.

With the ever-present space constraint, we need to flex our creativity and create “fluidity of space” rather than separate, distinct functions. For example, a long, curvy leather sofa can be designed to serve the round dining table with seating. To make it more spacious, the kitchen walls may need to go. Also, multi-functional items serve best. For instance, the high table can be used for cooking preparations, a bar and even as an extra desk space.

Curtains are good to softly define the home office, yet allow for a larger living area when drawn back. If there is a bay window ledge, you can utilise it as a resting corner. A study table can be a dressing table as well and it is best positioned right in front of the window to offer sufficient natural light.

The open concept is another trick to maximise space. Get an open rack for the day’s clothes and set aside a small compartment space for the wife’s accessories and handbags.

Urban living and ultramodern cityscape that comprise of buildings made of concrete, glass and various metals dominate our life at work. The downside of urbanisation is a lack of nature and light-hearted colours. If you’re one of those feeling the common urban blue, you may want to consider a neutral colour palette with a mix of natural materials for your home. Let warm wood tones fill the space and build full-height cabinets along the walls of the living and dining area. This creates a warm vibe in tuned with nature and the generous storage space can come in handy. To add some colours into the living room space, you can choose colourful furniture that matches the style of your home. Wardrobes may line both walls at the entrance of the room and a seamless sliding door offers added privacy, if needed.
